ACTIVITIES TO DO OVER THE HOLIDAYS TO HELP GET TERM THREE OFF TO A BRILLIANT START...

THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK! IF YOU HAVE TIME AND WANT TO DO SOME WORK TO IMPROVE SOME OF YOUR AREAS OF LEARNING, LIKE READING OR SPELLING BELOW ARE SOME IDEAS THAT WILL HELP YOU STAY ON TRACK.

READING

Use the reading log I have given you to record what you read over the holidays. Try reading some comics, chapter books, picture books, magazines or anything else that interests you, to keep practising your reading skills. Remember to make predictions, clarify, question and summarise as you read to help you get a better understanding of what you have read.

SPELLING

Go through your spelling list and practise the words you don't know so well. Also look up in a dictionary any words that you don't know the meaning of. I'll be testing you all in the first week back.

MATHS

Practise your basic facts and place value. Teach someone else in your family how to play traffic light or basic facts bingo so they can play with you, or try one of the quizzes on the maths sites through our delicious page; otherwise you could do up your own grids. TRY NOT TO DO ALGORITHMS UNTIL YOU HAVE USED SOME OF YOUR MENTAL MATHS STRATEGIES. For stage 6 you need to be able to do problems in at least two different ways that are not algorithms.

82 - 37 = 45 This could be done as an algorithm, but there are other quicker ways to do it in your head...

82-30 = 52 52-7=45 place value method

(82 + 3) - (37 + 3) is the same as 85 - 40, so 80 - 40 = 40, then + 5 = 45 compensation

These are just two of quite a few different ways to do it.

SPEECHES Remember to plan and draft your speech, then practise by reading it to family and friends. Ask them for suggestions on how you can improve it. Be ready to conference with me in the first week of term three. Use our speeches page to help each other through the discussion, and get ideas by listening to the examples on our page and Room 11's wiki (see the link at the top of the page).

WRITING (HANDWRITING/TYPING) Keep a daily journal of your holiday either on paper or on your wikispace page. This will also be a good chance to practise your other skills like editing your work, spelling, handwriting and/or typing. Also we'll be able to keep up with what each other is doing.

CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING If you get the chance, go for lots of walks and runs. Try and keep your fitness level up by staying active so when we get back to school you can carry on trying to reach your goal.
